This book is the result of the author’s six years work in South Sudan where he functioned as both a medical doctor and an anthropologist. The main aim of this book is that the reader should first feel engaged in the dialogue with the Dinka Agaar within a world where their lives and stories tell what needs telling. For this reason, stories told by the Dinka with little editing is found early in this book, earlier than the form which traditional ethnographies would otherwise take. Most of the theory is concentrated within sections that will be of special interest to students of anthropology and sociology. Each chapter deals with a different aspect of Dinka society and life that will be of interest to students of a variety of social sciences and each topic should lead one deeper into an understanding of life in South Sudan.

Dans ce livre, l’auteur livre les résultats des travaux et recherches qu’il a menés en sa qualité de médecin et d’anthropologue pendant six ans au Soudan du Sud. Le principal objectif du livre consiste à permettre au lecteur de s’engager tout d’abord dans un dialogue avec les Dinka Agaar au sein d’un monde où leur vie et leurs histoires personnelles disent ce qui doit être dit. C’est pour cette raison que, contrairement à l’organisation textuelle adoptée par l’ethnographie traditionnelle, les témoignages des Dinka – les textes publiés conservant leur parole authentique, peu retouchée- sont placés au début du livre. La théorie est en grande partie exposée dans des sections présentant un intérêt particulier pour les étudiants en anthropologie et sociologie. Chaque chapitre aborde un aspect différent de la société et de la vie des Dinka, qui suscitera l’intérêt des étudiants en sciences sociales en général, et chaque sujet traité permettra de développer une compréhension approfondie de la vie au Soudan du Sud.
